The first listed film of the New Year: Star Trek.
This one wouldn’t have been my choice to kick off the project, but the brother was agitating to see it and is leaving the city again in a few days, so I had to relent. I think all in all I was right to do so. Taking on anything over two hours or vaguely intellectual this evening would have been too much, and resultantly I probably would have reverted to The West Wing. (In itself, of course, this is never a bad thing.)
By way of a mini disclaimer, I should state that I am not a “Trekkie”, which may be apparent from my delay in watching this, and will become even more so before the end of this paragraph. I can recall seeing some of the original films and original series when I was younger, but have never considered myself a fan. That said, I did enjoy The Next Generation more than I ever dared to admit, back in the days when my geek level was well hidden. Ergo I knew the characters and had some vague chronology of the old films, and hence *some* preconceptions prior to this film, but none particularly entrenched and certainly no ideals or expectations to be destroyed.
With an open mind therefore, I cringed through the predictable opening 15-20 minutes, took an instant liking to New Spock and an instant disliking to New Kirk. Fortunately I think that was the idea, particularly with Kirk, and he grew less loathsome as it progressed. Again, I’m sure that’s the journey we’re meant to be taken on, as he grows and develops and becomes his father’s son etc etc yada yada yada. I liked the steady introduction of the characters, was surprised to be won over instantly by Simon Pegg’s Scotty (despite his seemingly channeling Billy Boyd, I was impressed by the accent) and found myself by the end, against my better judgement, quite fond of the crew.
To be continued when I’m more awake.
